Golf and Spa

Thalassotherapy was made famous by the French cyclist and idol Louison Bobet after he claimed that his Tour de France successes (1953-55) and recovery from a serious car crash were thanks to regular spa treatments. In fact, he opened his own spa in Quiberon in Brittany. Thalassotherapy involves the use of seawater and its treatments are today available on the French equivalent of the National Health Service. Of course, there are all sorts of spa treatments and probably the most French is vinotherapy which was developed on the Chateau Haut Laffite wine estate near Bordeaux and comes under the brand Les Sources de Caudalie and uses the residue of wine making. Caudalie is sold throughout the world and the spa and hotel at Les Sources de Caudalie has won numerous international awards.

These days most decent hotels have a spa of some sort but there are spas and there are spas and if you’re serious about treating yourself, you want to go to the best. Terre Blanche in Provence just about covers everything a luxury hotel can and for golf and spa it’s the tops with two beautiful courses and a stunning spa featuring anti-age Ivo Pitanguy treatments and Carita beauty treatments.

The La Prairie Spa at Hotel Royal Evian is always voted among the finest. The hotel is pure class and the golf course hosts the Ladies Fifth Major…All these attractions are just one hour from Geneva Airport. Not far from Geneva and even closer to Lyon is the Georges Blanc Parc and Spa at Vonnas – Georges Blanc is an icon of French cooking and he owns three hotels and two restaurants as well as the Decleor & Carita spa. There are two golf courses within a 30-minute drive too.

On the French Riviera, the Clarins spa at Hotel Barriere Majestic on Cannes beachfront is the best of the best in these most glamorous of resorts. The Les Sources de Caudalie at Martillac not only features vinotherapy but now thermal treatments using a water source 540m below ground. The Guerlain spa at the classy Walfdorf Astoria Trianon Palace in Versailles has long been a favourite and features 2800m2 of space dedicated to TLC. And the five-floor Imperial spa at Hotel du Palais overlooking the Atlantic Ocean at Biarritz in south-west France is as luxurious as you could find anywhere.

There are many more hotels on our books with quality spas such as Nuxe Spa at Westminster Barriere Le Touquet, the Spa du Drap d’Or at the Hotel de Bougtheroulde in Rouen, Hotel Royal La Baule, the Relais et Chateaux Auberge du Jeu de Paume in Chantilly and the Dolce Fregate in Provence are just a few that have impressed.
