Golf and City

If you’re looking for the buzz and nightlife and culture of a city base for your French Golf Holiday, there are several destinations worth serious consideration. Working around the coast, Lille (with five golf courses within a 30-minute drive) is best for Northern France thanks to its 1001 bars, great array of museums and reputation as France’s second most important financial centre. Rouen (three local golf courses) in Normandy is a brilliant city showing off its medieval heritage with flair and combining cobbled-streets with the latest shops and an enviable choice of bars and restaurants. Rennes (three local golf courses) in Brittany has reinvented itself over the last decade and sparkles with a small but refined selection of hotels and a wonderful quality of life. For the Loire, both Angers and Tours (two local courses each) mix in chateaux, wine, shops and the latest in entertainment and public transport and really are a showpiece of how a 21st-century city should be.

Bordeaux is now often voted as the leading tourist city destination in Europe and it’s no wonder. It’s smart, lively, the public spaces are inventive, there’s a massive array of hotels, bars and eateries to suit every budget and there’s sea, sand, vineyards and countryside within very easy reach. And with half-a-dozen attractive golf courses nearby, it’s fabulous for golfers too.

Montpellier and Nimes effortlessly combine ancient history and cosmopolitan atmospheres. Each with four golf courses in the vicinity, you can enjoy the beautiful Languedoc scenery during the day and return to your lively base for the evening. Aix-en-Provence is one of the most famous and oldest university towns of Europe and is celebrated for its café culture, leafy boulevards and comprehensive selection of museums.

Heading back north, Lyon is France’s second city and is always on the move with events and exhibitions. It’s got the energy of the north with the weather of the south. Judged by most as the gastronomic capital of France, you know you’re going to eat well. You’ll drink, explore and have plenty of fun too. For golf, there are half-a-dozen courses that we like within a 30-minute drive.

Of course, France has plenty of large and bustling towns and resorts too and with such a huge variety of geography and ambience, France can be pretty much whatever you want it to be.
