Golf and Chateaux

France is the home of the Chateau and these magnificent houses and estates are often open to the public. From the government-owned National Monuments to every region offering a Cultural Pass affording access to the chateaux of the area, there’s the world’s largest choice of chateaux for you to choose from. And of course, if you really want to combine golf & chateaux, you should stay in one: we know all the golf chateaux in France and we also know many chateaux within a ten-minute drive of a good golf course. The chateaux-hotels in France come in many guises; they can be relatively simple family-run affairs to the most sublime hotel experiences so you can enjoy all the splendour without sacrificing any modern comforts.

Basically speaking, the wealthier a region was in medieval times, the more chateaux is offers as a chateau was a statement of success with many taking decades to build. The “garden of France”, the Loire offers the most chateaux per square mile, Burgundy – a hugely influential region for hundreds of years – has some real show-stoppers, the South of France and Normandy have the full range of huge “chateau fort” (strongholds) to ornate renaissance, Champagne, south-west chateaux tend to be slightly smaller but extremely pretty and often surrounded by vineyards, the chateaux around Paris are massive affairs such as Chateau de Conde in Chantilly, Chateau de Versailles and, Napoleon’s favourite, Chateau de Fontainebleau and we also like Chateau de Compiegne north of Chantilly and the perfect Chateau Le Vaux Le Vicomte north of Fontainebleau. Chateaux in the north of France tend to be strongholds built as protection against the English, and the Rhone Alps and Alsace show off their European ties (and huge fortunes) with elaborate and eclectic designs such as Chateau Haut Koenigsbourg near Strasbourg and Chateau de Vizille (also a museum about the French Revolution) near Grenoble.

We provide a handy pocket guide with every ticket pack but with our “Golf & Chateaux” holidays, we also give you a specialist book on the chateaux of France so you can bone-up on the subject before you go and line up those you want to visit after perhaps a morning round of golf or a day or two dedicated to visiting these splendid monuments.
